How Many PoE Ports Do You Need for 8 Security Cameras?

When you build an 8-camera IP surveillance system, the single most common mistake is buying a switch with too few powered ports. Here is the rule that never fails.

One port per camera, plus one uplink

Every IP camera that uses Power over Ethernet needs its own PoE port. An 8-camera layout therefore needs 8 PoE ports — and you also want a separate uplink port to connect the switch to your NVR, router or network video recorder. That is why a switch labelled "8-port PoE" should really mean 8 powered ports plus an independent gigabit uplink, not 8 ports total.
